Nissan Motor CEO says Datsun brand to return to Nissan

By Andjarsari Paramaditha

(Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co's revived Datsun brand will target increasing sales in Indonesia, India and Russia, the firm's chief executive told reporters on Tuesday.

Nissan plans to invest $400 million in Indonesia over the next two years, will double hiring by 2014 and triple its dealerships in Southeast Asia's largest economy to 90,000, CEO Carlos Ghosn said during a visit to Jakarta.

Nissan quit using the Datsun brand in 1981, but earlier this month a newspaper announced plans to revive the nameplate for cars and trucks for emerging markets. "It's a green car, affordable car, small displacement, high local content," Ghosn said of the Datsun. "It's going to be a generous car."

Nissan executives met Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday and said they would inject $400 million for plant expansions to double production by 2014.

Nissan appointed Kintaro Izumida as president director of PT Nissan Motor Indonesia (NMI) and PT Nissan Motor Distributor Indonesia, earlier this month, replacing Takayuki Kimura.

"The priority (for Nissan Motors in Indonesia) is for the Indonesian market," Ghosn said. "If there is any room for more capacity it will be located for the domestic (market) rather than for exports, although cost is competitive."

NMI had previously targeted sales of 60,000 units and sales growth of 7 percent, according to the company website, which also said it would open 70 dealerships by end of 2011.

NMI is the third best-selling brand in Indonesia and hopes to increase sales by launching a cheaper multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and city car suited specifically for its market.

The company's largest sales in Indonesia come from its popular family mini van Grand Livina, which accounts for 45 percent of sales. The city car lines, March and Juke, came second in line with 40 percent.

PT Indomobil Sukses Makmur, Nissan's authorised distributor in Indonesia, launched its crossover model, Nissan Juke in the first half of last year, and has sold 1,600 units per month since.

Nissan has been pushing rapidly into emerging markets, including a partnership with Ashok Leyland Ltd in India and a recently announced factory in Brazil, where it aims to triple its market share by 2016.

Nissan and its French partner, Renault SA, are also close to announcing a deal to increase the alliance's stake in Russia's AvtoVAZ, the maker of Lada cars, to aid growth there.

A resurrection of Datsun would follow a growing trend to bring back heritage nameplates, including Toyota's 86, or "Hachi-roku" sports car, Chrysler's Dodge Dart and partner Fiat's 500.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Concept: 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Just the Facts:
-Nissan's midsize Pathfinder SUV is shifting from a body-on-frame design to unitized construction for model year 2013.
-The Pathfinder Concept previews the production version that will reach U.S. dealers this fall.
-The 2013 Pathfinder gets a smaller V6 engine and continuously variable automatic transmission.

DETROIT — Nissan's midsize Pathfinder SUV is shifting from a body-on-frame design to unitized construction for model year 2013. And that's not the only major change on the fourth-generation Pathfinder that's due to reach U.S. dealers this fall and is previewed in the Pathfinder Concept that debuts here at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

To secure a 25-percent increase in combined city/highway fuel economy, while retaining the vehicle's towing capability, Nissan is reducing the weight of the 2013 Pathfinder and fitting it with a smaller-displacement V6 and a continuously variable automatic transmission.

The current 2012 Pathfinder, which shares its body-on-frame architecture with the much larger Nissan Armada, comes with a standard 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic transmission. The EPA rates that combination at 15 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway.

The next-gen Pathfinder is likely to borrow heavily from the Murano, which has a 260-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a CVT, with EPA city/highway ratings of 18/23 mpg.

Nissan said the smaller V6 in the 2013 Pathfinder "maintains nearly the same horsepower as the previous generation's larger-displacement V6."

The Pathfinder Concept shows off the new exterior design cues that are expected to grace future Nissan trucks, but its interior won't be revealed until either the Chicago or New York auto show.

Nissan said the truck will have three rows of seats, with accommodations for seven passengers.

The automaker said the new Pathfinder will feature an "intuitive four-wheel-drive system," as well as "towing capacity competitive with leaders in the segment." The interior will have "excellent legroom in all three rows and ample cargo room behind the third row."

Inside Line says: Nissan says the 2013 Pathfinder is one of 20 new or redesigned products that it plans to bring to the U.S. market over the next two years.

Burlapp Find: 2013 Nissan Rogue?!?

I for one think that this would be a nice improvement over the existing Rogue, but then again I've always felt that the current Rogue doesn't stack up against the outgoing Nissan X-Trail (only available in Canada at the time, but is still sold abroad).

Leftlane News: Next Gen Nissan Altima Spyshots

By Andrew Ganz
Monday, Nov 21st, 2011 @ 3:08 pm
Nissan’s strong-selling Altima has been a hit for the Japanese automaker since its mid-1990s debut, but a fifth-generation model is just around the corner.

Our spy braved a torrential downpour to discover a a bright red Altima sedan covered in camouflage. But despite the presence of the camo, it’s not hard to make out the new Altima’s curves.
From the rear, we can easily see that the back fenders and the tail lamps will closely mirror the larger Maxima brother. Unlike the current car, which traces much of its design to the third-generation model, the new Altima will be much less angular.
Up front, a familial tie to the recently-released Nissan Versa is evident. But where the Versa is necessarily downmarket, the Altima gets a little more playful with complex designs to its headlamps and lower light package.
The black wheels on this car are likely painted such to distract from their appearance; a black wheel trim package seems an unlikely Altima option.
We don’t know what’s under this Altima’s hood, but rumors suggest that a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will serve as motivation for most Altimas. The current 2.5-liter four is expected to be put out to pasture, but Nissan is expected to follow in the footsteps of Toyota by keeping a V6 option for range-topping models. Hyundai and General Motors have been slicing V6s from their midsize sedan lineups.
Putting the turbo four’s power to the front wheels will be a new CVT, which has been reengineered to deliver better fuel economy and a higher level of refinement.
A version of the 2.5-liter four is expected to show up alongside an electric motor for a homegrown hybrid inspired by the Infiniti M Hybrid. The last Altima Hybrid was a limited-market model built using Toyota’s hybrid technology and it was discontinued for the 2012 model year.
Look for the new Altima to debut at the New York International Auto Show in early April before going on sale by the end of the summer. The current Altima coupe will likely stay on for another year before being redesigned in an effort to become more emotional and evocative.

Nissan PIVO 3 Concept

PIVO 3 Concept was designed as third generation of super compact electrical automobile that is conceived by Nissan. This Nissan PIVO 3 was exhibited at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The length of the vehicle is a smaller amount than three m and therefore the interior style are presented to accommodate up to three individuals. The seating style adopts the 1 + 2 seating layout. the outside style of this electrical vehicle introduce the new style language from the corporate by avoiding the spherical surface to attain additional serious look yet as proactive treatment created from angled surface and conjointly sharp edge, whereas the inside style has modest line and is completed with high – tech feature that is symbolized by the domination of white – blue color accent.

“It’s not a straightforward challenge for us. As an iconic style, it’s one thing we tend to fancy to mess around, one thing new and [we can] ignore today’s style theme. however PIVO 3 is strictly designed for the mainstream of our EV, therefore we've plenty of requirements: Nissan-ness, EV-ness, to be realistic and environmentally friendly. meaning we've mixture of needs and therefore the style groups are operating onerous to create certain all those needs are combined into one style which style ought to be at a better level than PIVO and PIVO 2. We’re pleased with this style as a result of the ultimate execution is such a high level of style as well as Nissan-ness and EV-ness and conjointly the real-car feeling. you'll be able to feel those things through the look.”

Japan's plants hum, but hurdles remain

By Hans Greimel
TOKYO -- Playing a frantic game of catch-up, Japan's automakers are running assembly plants at a pace faster than pre-earthquake schedules in order to boost inventories and recoup sales.

Toyota and Nissan are leading the surge, with output in Japan not only back to normal but exceeding year-ago levels. Mazda and Suzuki have reported their first year-over-year production increases since the March 11 quake, and Honda, Subaru and Mitsubishi are close behind.

But even as the companies return to full domestic output, big hurdles remain.

Some model variants are still in limited production because of lingering shortages of parts, especially microcontrollers. And even with output restored, it could take months for carmakers to rebuild prequake inventory levels, especially at U.S. dealerships.

Suppliers may struggle to keep pace with the surge. And automakers are rejiggering supply chains so they won't get burned again.

They are racing to find multiple sources for parts; tighten control over lower-tier suppliers; buy more parts overseas; and even bolster stockpiles, an abrupt change from Japan's treasured just-in-time approach.

Building inventories
Toyota is among the most aggressive in its supplier overhaul.

"We have instructed them to have a plan that allows them to go back to normal operations within two weeks of a major disaster," Shinichi Sasaki, Toyota Motor Corp.'s executive vice president for global purchasing, told Automotive News.

Toyota's domestic output rose 12 percent in August -- its first year-over-year increase since the earthquake. But it does not expect normal U.S. inventories until March.

Nissan's domestic production actually edged ahead of last year's in May. But not even Nissan says it can make all the car variants it wants. Because of pinched pipelines for some microcontrollers, the small computer chips that control everything from engines to entertainment systems, Nissan does not expect to return to unrestricted production until later this month.

Subaru says its Japan plant will be back to normal by the end of October. But it will take until March for the brand to achieve prequake U.S. inventory levels, especially for Japan-made models such as the Forester SUV and Impreza sedan.

Chips still down
Output of most models at Honda is almost back to normal. But it is still facing shortages of the redesigned Civic in the United States and the Brio small car for Asia. Because those cars were introduced after the quake, Honda couldn't stockpile enough microchips. Civic production should return to normal by the end of this month, and U.S. inventories of the model are expected to be restored by late November.

Nissan spokesman Toshitake Inoshita said: "In terms of raw production numbers, we have more than full production. But we are still waiting on some electronic chips."

Chip maker Renesas Electronics Corp. of Tokyo remains a bottleneck, but that will ease soon. The supplier, which controls about 41 percent of the global market for automotive microcontrollers, returned to prequake output at the end of September, spokeswoman Kyoko Okamoto said. That means a normal flow of chips will start to reach automakers this month.

But Renesas is far from recovered. It recouped prequake output by shifting work from its damaged Naka factory in Japan's quake zone to chip foundries in Singapore and Taiwan. The Naka factory is still limping along at just over half its prequake capacity. Until the factory is fully restored, it may be hard for Renesas to meet increased demand as automakers ramp up.
Masaya Yamashita, Honda Motor Co.'s global purchasing boss, says: "In order to supply to the carmakers, I think Tier 1 suppliers are really struggling to make deliveries to all of us. The parts are reaching us. But the inventory of parts in the chain is pretty tight."

The pinch has Toyota revising its famous low-inventory, just-in-time production system.

Normally, Toyota carries a two-month inventory of Renesas chips, global procurement chief Sasaki says. But it will raise that figure to as high as four months.

"Right now we are recalculating the optimal volume of inventory that is necessary based on our estimate of how long it will take production at our suppliers to resume after a disaster," he said.

Another new norm: paternalistic big-footing of lower-tier suppliers, a practice previously all but unknown.

Take Nippon Chemi-Con Corp., a maker of aluminum foil for electrolytic capacitors for the electrical system. Its factory was wiped out.

Toyota, which is accustomed to working intimately with Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, decided to get active with lower-tier suppliers that had been flying far below the radar. But when Toyota stepped in to help Nippon Chemi-Con, the industry supplier rebuffed Toyota as an interloper, according to an internal Toyota report reviewed by Automotive News.

Only after weeks of arm-twisting by did the supplier acquiesce to Toyota's help in pumping out 700 tons of liquid waste that had flooded the factory.

Paint battle
Toyota also butted heads with pigment maker Merck, which makes a pearl luster pigment called Xirallic. Merck's kilns in Onahama, Japan, were damaged and unable to supply the pigment, which is a component in many paint colors and is used in about 20 percent of Toyota's vehicles.

Merck rejected Toyota's offers of assistance, according to the Toyota report. So Toyota tried making its own pigments -- with mixed results. Of 67 missing colors, Toyota could successfully substitute only 37.

That was enough to tide Toyota over while Merck recovered. But Sasaki said Toyota asked Merck to establish a backup production site in Germany, the supplier's home country. Merck agreed.

Expect all automakers to keep lower-tier suppliers on a tight leash. Toyota, Nissan and Honda are demanding more control over where suppliers get their components.

"The parts and materials that remained the biggest issues for the longest time after the earthquake aren't the parts that we buy, but the parts or materials that the Tier 1 or Tier 2 suppliers buy," says Honda's Yamashita. When possible, he says, "we want to have dual sources."

Autoblog: 2013 Nissan Altima taking shape

Out of respect for Priddy and Co. I am just supplying a link at the bottom of the page to the spyshots;

Now that we've seen the updated Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Malibu, not to mention the already-on-fire Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, it's time for the rest of the mid-size sedan players to freshen up their offerings. Nissan looks to follow suit later this year with the all-new 2013 Altima, which our spy photographers recently caught testing with a very revealing camouflage treatment.

Up front, the new headlights and grille take a swoopier shape, as do the foglights below. (Squint, and you may see a bit of Hyundai Genesis in that front end – just sayin'.) Out back, the taillights get a similar dose of rakishness, probably akin to what we've been seeing on Nissan's latest designs – the Maxima, 370Z and Juke.

Reports have indicated that Nissan will offer a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Altima, and if so, it's unclear whether or not the older, 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four will stick around. Expect the 3.5-liter V6 to still be the range-topping powerplant, with six-speed transmissions (manual and CVT) to be offered throughout the range.
